History in the Making

Mill240 lives on the campus of the original Bay State Mill, the first textile mill in Lawrence. After opening in 1848, the mill focused on the production of the “Bay State Shawl” and other textiles.  In 1858 the Bay State Mills were reorganized into Washington Mills and the owners demolished and rebuilt what was known as Building No. 6 in 1918. Washington Mills was a major player in the 1912 labor strike known as the Bread and Roses strike.  Mill240’s history as a textile mill ended in 1939 when it was sold to a wood molding company and then to A&D Corrugated Box Co.  Newark Paper purchased the mill in the 1980’s and converted it into a paper plant until its most recent transformation!
